How to Lose Fat While on the Road

Over the weekend, my friend Zac asked me this question:

“Here’s a challenge for you.  I’ve asked for a program from my buddy who trains a lot and he couldn’t do it.  I live on the road 5 days a week.  All I can use to workout at hotels is dumbbells and a treadmill (what most noobs have at home too).  How can I get a full body workout from just dumbbells?”

Challenge accepted.

Luckily, a guy named Craig Ballantyne (#7 on the Top 40 Fitness Professionals list) has been doing this for years…and the results are pretty sweet.  Here is a workout that I wrote (with a big Craig influence):

Too bad Craig isn’t as ripped as The Situation.

Warmup (repeat 2 times)

  • Bodyweight Sqauts – 12 reps
  • Pushups – 8 reps
  • Lunges – 8 reps each leg

Workout

Superset 1 (perform exercises back to back with 30 seconds rest in between)

  • 1A:  Dumbbell Reverse Lunges – 8 reps each leg
  • 1B:  Dumbbell Thrusters – 8 reps

(Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 sets of each exercise.)
Superset 2 (perform exercises back to back with 30 seconds rest in between)

  • 2A:  Single Leg RDL – 8 reps each leg
  • 2B:  Dumbbell Bent Over Row – 8 reps each arm

(Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 sets of each exercise.)

Finisher

Bodyweight Tabata

  • Burpees (perform for 20 seconds), rest 10 seconds;
  • Mountain Climbers (perform for 20 seconds), rest 10 seconds;
  • Pushups (perform for 20 seconds), rest 10 seconds;
  • Alternating Lunge Jumps (perform for 20 seconds), rest 10 seconds

(Repeat the above circuit once more.  This finisher should take you exactly 4 minutes.)

Tough Workout Bro

Ya, you’re telling me.  Try it out, and let me know what you think.  Craig Ballantyne has written tons of books on this exact topic.  One product by him that I definitely recommend is called, Turbulence Training.  This product has so many workouts that you probably won’t end up doing the same one for like 6 months.

Back in the Day…

A couple years ago, I started doing workouts like this in my room during exams.  They were super effective, and short.  It’s kind of funny, though.  Back then, I didn’t own any dumbbells, so I lifted my guitar amp as a weight.  If people were watching me workout through my window, they probably thought I was crazy.  Who cares.  It was actually pretty fun.
